Lepisma saccharina
Quick ID Markers
Habits & Biology
Ancient, wingless insect that thrives in high humidity (75%+) and temperature 70–90°F. Feeds on starchy materials: paper, book bindings, wallpaper paste, cotton, rayon, linen, dead insects, and food debris. Very long-lived (3–6 years). Difficult to detect — nocturnal and cryptic.
Typical Hiding Areas
Bathroom and kitchen walls, attic insulation, behind baseboards, in bookcases, inside walls near plumbing, in cardboard boxes, and in areas with high moisture and starch materials.
Signs of Activity

🧪 Treatment Plan
Silverfish control requires reducing humidity combined with gel bait, insecticide dust in wall voids, and perimeter spray. Moisture control is the most critical long-term factor.
Silverfish cannot survive in low humidity. Run dehumidifiers in basements and bathrooms to keep relative humidity below 50%. Fix all plumbing leaks.
Prevention After Treatment
- •Maintain humidity below 50% in all living areas
- •Store paper and books in sealed bins
- •Fix all plumbing leaks promptly
- •Quarterly perimeter spray inside closets and bathrooms
