Powderpost Beetle
Lyctus spp. / Anobium spp.
Quick ID Markers
Habits & Biology
Larvae bore through hardwood (Lyctids) or seasoned softwood (Anobiids), consuming the wood from inside while leaving a thin outer surface intact. Adults emerge through round holes. Infestations often introduced on new lumber or secondhand furniture. Anobiid beetles require higher moisture content.
Typical Hiding Areas
Hardwood floors, furniture, antiques, structural hardwood, seasoned softwood in crawlspaces and attics.
Signs of Activity
🗓️ Seasonality
Adults emerge spring through summer. Larvae active year-round. Exit holes appear when new adults emerge.
⚠️ Mistaken Identity
🧪 Treatment Plan
Powderpost beetle control focuses on moisture reduction for Anobiid species, borate treatment of accessible wood, and removal/replacement of heavily infested material.
Widespread structural infestations in inaccessible areas may require professional fumigation.
New, bright, clean frass indicates active infestation. Darkened, caked frass may be old. Vacuum old frass, wait 2–4 weeks, and check for new frass to confirm activity.
Prevention After Treatment
- •Inspect secondhand furniture and lumber before use
- •Apply borate to bare wood during construction
- •Maintain crawlspace humidity below 50%
- •Never use unseasoned wood in finished structures
